Blackberry, the prestigious smartphone manufacturer is throwing in the towel - Painful it is how the smartphone many aimed to use some years back, is giving up on making its own smartphones, for reasons of lack of profits and patronage from smartphone consumers.
The Canadian company opted to be a software company only and to rely entirely on external companies for any future hardware projects.
John Chen, Chief Executive Officer, Blackberry, said last year that "if by September, I couldn't find a way to get there (profits), then I need to seriously consider being a software company only."
Now, it is real and actually happening!
The Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement, yesterday, that: "Our new Mobility Solutions strategy is showing signs of momentum, including our first major device software licensing agreement with a telecom joint venture in Indonesia. Under this strategy, we are focusing on software development, including security and applications. The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners. This allows us to reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital."
An adage in Yoruba says, "whoever goes to the market to buy something, should not listen to the voice of the crowd". This goes to Blackberry for giving up in its quest to make a difference in the smartphone world. This use to be a star in its world back then, but for the advent of iPhone and Android devices.
Yes! There is no field without an opponent, but winning the race makes better amongst the multitude.
Blackberry has forgotten what it was and what it brought to the smartphone table. It brought a difference and security!
If only it could dig deep to consider the utmost needs of smartphone users, create something worthy of a contest, and above all in a reasonable cost.
Blackberry Passport was a hit. We love Passport. No iPhone or Android device can stand its professional & executive design and functions yet. We were expecting a more senior version, only to hear of Blackberry's retreat in the hardware business! #ShakeMyHead#
Well, I'm in no way surprised at its decision to give up, I saw this coming when it unveiled its first Android mobile (Priv) and again its Alcatel like DTEK50.
