"This is a call to glory of Microsoft Lumia smartphones and a welcome of Nokia 216 feature phone as a farewell gift."
We hereby commiserate with its esteemed users for such great loss in the society and we pray that our hope for the upcoming Mircosoft Surface Phone be not shattered with time.
Microsoft announced nearly a year ago, of its daring giant step, writing off most of its Nokia deal at $7.6 billion and has since significantly laid off thousands of employees. The company also announced that it is selling its feature phone business to Foxconn for $350 million.
A line in Microsoft's press release hints that the company might never release another Lumia phone again:
"Microsoft will continue to develop Windows 10 Mobile and support Lumia phones such as the Lumia 650, Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, and phones from OEM partners like Acer, Alcatel, HP, Trinity and VAIO."
This implies the discontinuance to develop new Lumia devices, or is there any hint at future hardware coming soon.
Terry Myerson, Microsoft's Windows and Devices Chief said, Microsoft is committed to Windows 10 Mobile, and that the company is currently developing "next generation products." There was no reference to Lumia, and rumors have suggested Microsoft will launch a Surface-branded phone next year.
Also, yesterday, as we least expected, Microsoft unveiled its latest Nokia 216 feature phone, despite the deal with Foxconn.
Does this mean Microsoft has changed its deal unannounced, wants to continue running feature phones in the background or this is a farewell gift for its esteemed users and a gateway for the rumored Surface Phone?
As the Verge's Tom Warren points out that the reason behind Microsoft's feature phone business was to get people to sign up for a Microsoft account, which would then act as kind of an on-ramp into their whole wide world.
The new Nokia 216 features a 2.4-inch QVGA display, 0.3-megapixel cameras (front & rear), a headphone jack and running on the Series 30 OS with the Opera mini browser. It will be available in India next month for $37.
Microsoft's rumored "Surface Phone," is expected to drop sometime next year.
