Though not tested hands-on, but if the specs were to be true and the phones are capable of what it claims to be, then I must say, they are worthy to be in the same wrestling ring with Apple's iPhone 6.
The Tecno Phantom 6 features a full-metal unibody, 5.5 inches display AMOLED screen, Corning Gorilla glass v3.0 covering, a 3GB RAM and 32GB ROM and an external SD card slot, Octa-core processor 2.0 Ghz MediaTek chipset, Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, Dual-sim slot, a 18-megapixel dual rear camera with dual LED flash (the top one is 13MP Sony IMX 258 and the bottom one is a 5MP resolution - the former is used to record the view, while the latter provides more depth and clarity to the picture) and a 8-megapixel front-facing camera with LED flash, Iris scanner 2.0, USB type-C ports, a 2700 mAh non-removable battery capacity with Quick Charge technology.
However, the larger sibling, Phantom 6 Plus features a full-metal unibody 6.0inches display FHD LTPS Capacitive touch screen, Corning Gorilla glass v3.0 covering, Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM (No external SD card slot), a Dual-sim slot (which one can be removed and replaced with a MicroSD), a 21-megapixel Sony IMX 230 rear camera with dual flash and 8-megapixel front-facing camera with front flash, Deca-core MediaTek Helio X20 chipset, Iris scanner 2.0 and finger print scanner, and a 4050 mAh non-removable battery capacity with Quick Charge technology.
I must say that TECNO have improved big time with these devices compared to the older products, but making such intended high-end smartphone (Phantom 6, precisely) to have a battery capacity of 2700 mAh, is just too lame and has relegated it to the level of midrange smartphones. Yes, midrange! Nothing overly special about the Phantom 6. Just impressive that Tecno has improved.
If from what I heard it took Tecno 400days (up to 2years) to make these devices, why on earth should it launch them with Android Marshmallow 6.0, when the Android Nougat 7.0 is out already and could have patiently incorporated it in them?
Well, I am not much surprised, Tecno has a way of shortchanging its consumers with scanty improvements in its products and continuing in that circle by later unveiling another flagship.
The Phantom 6 and 6 Plus goes for the price of N110,000 ($349) and N140,000 ($444), respectively.
But, pardon me, why should I wanna spend such huge amount on a Tecno Phantom 6, a device that cannot withstand the test of time - a device that in few months time will be overthrown by Tecno itself, unveiling another flagship with scanty updates? Never! I would rather spend a chunk of money to get a Asus Zenfone 3 Deluxe.
