As we humans communicate with one another from a distance via some technological means, similar initiative is soon gradually covering automobiles, which is geared towards an effective and safe driver assistance.
Volvo will before the end of the year join Mercedes-Benz and Toyota on the list of automobile manufacturers offering systems that allow vehicles to exchange information, availing the driver advanced warning about poor road conditions or obstacles further ahead.
Volvo’s car-to-car communication will be present in the 90 series (covering the S90, V90 and XC90).
How does this work?
With the built wireless communication tech in partnership with Ericsson, the cars will be able to send and receive warnings about road conditions between vehicles, as well as about problems with the cars themselves - activating when you turn on your hazard lights, for instance, to give cars coming up behind a heads-up that there could be trouble ahead. Communication is then routed via the cloud so vehicles don’t need to have line-of-sight or other direct wireless connections.
Volvo says the features will probably be also rolled out to lower-cost model options after debuting on high-end vehicles.
Other automobile manufacturers like Cadillac, Audi and Jaguar Land Rover, are working on similar tech and are hoped to launch in 2017.
