Just like Uber app, which eases you of stress and allows you to request a car or meal to be delivered wherever you are, London Sperm Bank Donors, have launched a mobile phone app, tagged "Order A Daddy", the first of its kind.
This app avails women the opportunity to select a sperm donor based on characteristics including race, nationality and eye colour. Users can narrow down results from a sperm donor registry to find their ideal match and create a “wish list” alert that notifies them when a donor with their desired characteristics becomes available.
Sperm delivery at your disposal!
How does this work?
Click on the "search function", select few desired characteristics and wait for the search result. A list of potential fathers is provided – titled by number such as “Donor 1000” and “Donor 1004” – with their physical characteristics listed below.
The user can choose to click on “find out more”, which then brings up detailed information about the donor, including medical history, personality and a written description of their characteristics.
The donors listed are said to be from all reasonable walks of life (a wide range of professions including law, medicine, finance, engineering, hospitality, the performing arts and creative work). Interesting right?!
Well, a donor’s sperm sample costs £950 and payment can be made via the app. The sample is then delivered to the fertility clinic where the woman is being treated.
The app, which promotes itself as a way to “plan your family on the go”, is legal and meets the requirements of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), the IVF regulator. Also, about half of Britain’s IVF clinics are said to have registered to use the service.
As you know, there's no one or nothing made on earth without critics. Critics have claimed the app trivialises parenthood. Josephine Quintavalle, of the campaign group Comment on Reproductive Ethics, told The Times: “How much further can we go in the trivialisation of parenthood? This is reproduction via the mobile phone. It’s digital dads. Choose Daddy. This is the ultimate denigration of fatherhood.”
However, Dr. Kamal Ahuja, scientific director of the London Sperm Bank disagrees, explaining that all transactions these days are being made online. Also, that this allows a woman who wants to get a sperm donor to gain control in the privacy of her own home and choose and decide in her own time.
